It
was time to go abroad. In Switzerland, you never have to go too far to get the sensation of
being in another land, without actually leaving the country. Languages
are what form borders here. A country half the size of Ireland, with
half the number of states of the USA, boasts four national languages:
German, French, Italian and Romansch. Leaving St. Gallen on the corner
with Austria and Germany, and heading into the lakelands region
certainly gave that holiday feeling.
From Soloturn we followed the River Aare and Lake Biel to Neuchâtel.
Then a loop around the south side of Lake Neuchâtel brought us through
the beautiful medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac and cute little beaches
to the spa town of Yverdon-les-bains. Cereals, poppy fields and tobacco
plantations formed the backdrop for the journey to Lake Murten.
Avanches' Roman theatre was a neat pit stop to replenish liquid levels, with the sun high in the sky.
Fribourg was our last stop, right on the language border, a buffer zone
to change the chip, and where the first Grüezis could be heard
again. |
